The Pack is a Young Adult novel about a sophomore cheerleader (from Tucson) from an alcoholic family who is searching for belongingness named Erin. Her father is always yelling at her and her brother joins a gang. She ends up dating the darkest gang member and fights between her boyfriend and her brother ensue. Meanwhile, her skinhead sister is tempting fate, her mother cries while 'Daddy's' temper ticks like a suicidal time bomb.
The theme is basically being 'lost' and feeling like 'trash.' (But the gay experience is not deeply explored). But the sequel, Ragdoll, which is not out yet, explores Erin's experiences with a college lover who may or may not be gay. Erin says, 'Mushy loves me. I love her. We're just two souls clinging.' But she insists she isn't gay. 'How do you quantify the clinging?' she asks. Erin feels like the male in the relationship and insists that she desires the opposite sex. She is obsessed with an 'eighteen-year-old stoner (boy).'
