Kehilla Community Synagogue
Kehilla Community Synagogue was started in 1984 by people who wanted a synagogue that would be a spiritual home for politically progressive people who felt no connection with traditional synagogues. As the synagogue has grown over the last quarter-century, it has retained its original vision as laid out by Rabbi Burt Jacobson, our Founding Rabbi. ________________________________________ The core of this vision, and central to Judaism, is a spiritual mandate to heal and repair the world by increasing social justice, eschewing war and all forms of violence and aggression, caring for the planet, and exhibiting loving kindness to all. Rabbi Burt understood that this spiritual mandate is central to Jewish life, and thus should be central to the synagogue he founded. ________________________________________ Kehilla congregants recognize that Jewish community is in a state of continual evolution. Our households no longer follow exclusively traditional nuclear family models. Gender roles have evolved. Families are multi-cultural. Sexual preferences vary. Each person’s spiritual outlook is unique. Thus, Kehilla’s congregants have a variety of lifestyles, religious practices, theologies and atheologies. We relish the challenges posed by our diversity: creating communal and worship experiences that we can share together, using our diversity to enhance these experiences. _________________________________________ Approximately 25% of Kehilla members are in interfaith and/or multi-ethnic relationships. About as many identify as lesbian, gay, transgender or queer. In July 2008, seven same-sex couples celebrated their marriage in our sanctuary.
