Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards
For over 35 years Louis Lucas' grapes have been responsible for wines from Sebastiani, Kendall-Jackson, Robert Mondavi, Fess Parker, Sunstone, and many other Central Coast wineries and beyond. In 1996, Louis decided to step out from behind the scenes. He joined forces with retired judge Royce Lewellen, and with two of his own vineyards secured, acquired several other properties for producing wine.
These vineyards are located in three major micro-climates in Santa Barbara County, allowing for a broad range of wines to go out under the Lucas and Lewellen label. The Goodchild & Old Adobe Vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley consistently produce prize-winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. The Los Alamos Valley Vineyards are home to 20 varieties of grapes, representing the principal varieties of the Rhone, Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France, as well as Italian varieties.. The Lewellen & Lucas Vineyards in Santa Maria Valley produce outstanding Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc grapes, from gently rolling, low-yielding soils. And the Valley View Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley features what many consider Santa Barbara County's best Cabernet Sauvignon, in addition to Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah, much in demand by local wineries.
Lucas and Lewellen Vineyards has proudly announced the release of its first 2007 vintage wine-all made under the careful attention of highly esteemed winemaker Megan McGrath. Included are a Gewürztraminer and a Chenin Blanc released under the Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards label, and a Malvasia Bianca made for their Mandolina label. 2007 began a new chapter for this decade-old Santa Barbara winery with the hiring of 33-year-old Megan McGrath as winemaker, and the three wines represent the first efforts made entirely under her direction. McGrath and co-owner/viticulturalist Louis Lucas, are responsible for tending to 400 acres of vines in three separate vineyards, each in a distinct microclimate, allowing 25 unique varieties to thrive.
'We were thrilled to have Megan join the Lucas & Lewellen team in February 2007 as resident winemaker. I have had the distinct pleasure of working with her for the last 15 months. Her winemaking talent and experience coupled with her intimate knowledge of soil science bring the perfect blend of art and science to the winemaking process,' says Lucas.
At their Solvang tasting room, you can sample classic offerings such as Chardonnay and Cabernet, as well as rarities like, Gewurztraminer, Petite Verdot, Viognier, and a sparkling Blanc de Blanc Champenoise. These wines bear one of three proprietary labels: Lucas & Lewellen, which focuses on Rhone, Bordeaux, and Burgundy varietals;
Mandolina (has a separate tasting room in Solvang) is a line of Italian wines , including Barbera, Malvasia Bianca, Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Moscato and a Super Tuscan named Toccata;
Queen of Hearts, the third label under Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards is a fun and affordable selection of reds and whites.
The winery offers an exclusive array of wine clubs. The main club (Lucas & Lewellen) ships handcrafted wines in seasonal mailings to our special club members only. There's also an "Owners Select Wine Club," with selections handpicked by Louis and Royce Automatic deliveries of two Lucas & Lewellen wines arrive every two months.
Special winemaker dinners are frequently scheduled, pairing Lucas & Lewellen wines with five-course meals prepared by the best chefs of Santa Ynez Valley and beyond. Locations for the dinners vary depending on the theme, but the quality remains special.
