I believe successful therapy combines gaining insight into the origins of old patterns of thought and behavior that aren't working for you and attempting to make changes in those patterns, so that what has not worked can begin to work again. The changes involve 3 essential components: 1/ insight and understanding; 2/ accessing and being able to feel often difficult, even painful, feelings associated with those insights; 3/ starting to take risks in changing behavior patterns that are self-defeating. One way of viewing this process is learning to separate the past from the present, and knowing that the past doesn't have to determine the present.
