BAIT & SWITCH: Tension Between Scene and Unseen [11/25 | 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.]
Come meet artists Uta Fehlhaber-Smith and Angela S. Gay in our last Artists' Talk of the year @ Working Artists Gallery.
Gay and Fehlhaber-Smith serve up seemingly contrasting subjects and styles in this exhibit. Gay's isolation in her work is a passionate, internal, abstract exploration leading to profound connection. While Fehlhaber-Smith's figurative work observes the ritual of food at American cultural events leaving us with a real sense of disconnection - from the subject of the event and perhaps even more deeply, each other.
While Gay's work seems to come from an isolated place, and Fehlhaber-Smith's from community - the resulting work serves up just the opposite experiences.

Uta Fehlhaber-Smith
“Bread and Circus” Series by Fehlhaber-Smith, makes up the Bait half of the two-woman exhibit, Bait & Switch. Says the artist about this series: “The prominence of food at cultural events in this country is a phenomenon that strikes me as very American, and Americana, for me as a European, remain an important theme in my body of work.
“The work examines ubiquitous food at the following five events:
CIRCUS, DRIVE-IN MOVIE THEATERS, ART OPENINGS (“THE CHEESE EATERS”), FOOTBALL GAMES, CONCERTS.

“The magnitude or omnipresence of the food plays an integral part in these events, and this series is meant to be viewed as a satirical comment.”
The canvases are 26”x26” diptychs. The medium is acrylic. The style is representational.
Angela S. Gay
The collection of paintings by Gay represent an inward look in contrast to the outer view present by Fehlhaber-Smith, and represents the Switch.

Writes Gay, “The shapes and space I create on my canvas have so much life, past and present. They have memory, fear, strength, possibility, hurt, love, loss, balance, desire, trust…..The contours you see, I think describe me and where my soul has been. Each one different yet still starting and stopping at the same place, expressing new and familiar experiences. The shapes themselves describe me but in the space outside of those lines is where you will find me, grasping blindly for reason and chaos. No one ever thinks to look there….
“The texture seen in my work is the attempt to create emotion that refuses to be contained and thus removes itself from its stagnant place of being ‘simply there’.”

GUERILLA EXHIBITOR CLASSES
Marketing/Sales Strategy and Planning [12/6]
“If money be not thy servant, it will be thy master.” – Francis Bacon
Wouldn’t you, the independent artist or creative, love to have a reliable, step-by-step path to selling your work and services to people who want them?
I couldn’t find anything like that when I began my arts career. So I took everything I’d learned as an Ad Gal working with the world’s largest interactive advertising agency, broke it down into bite sized pieces and developed the Guerilla Exhibitor workshops for artists and creatives.
I know that developing marketing mastery is key to your sustained success, and this workshop is the foundation for that development. You will leave this workshop with:
- Practical knowledge in how to plan and strategize your marketing, which you will be able to replicate as you grow your business;
- An Action Plan that you can immediately implement;
- Confidence in knowing where you are headed in your business
Where, When and How of the Workshop:
LOCATION: souk, 322 NW 6th Avenue, Suite 200, PDX 97209
