National Coming Out Day October 11th! Read more...
Put this date on your calendar and make a personal pledge to come out to at least one other person on October 11th. For those (like me) who are already so far out of the closet that they no longer recognize the shape of a hanger, pledge to write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, or call your local talk radio show host, or take some other step to make lgbt visibility just a little bit more obvious.

Crisis: 40 Stories Revealing the Personal, Social, and Religious Pain and Trauma of Growing Up Gay in America Crisis: 40 Stories Revealing the Personal, Social, and Religious Pain and Trauma of Growing Up Gay in America
by Gold, Mitchell, Drucker, Mindy
A mental health crisis faces American teens right now--and it is one we can solve. Hundreds of thousands of gay teens face traumatic depression, fear, rejection, persecution, and isolation--usually alone. Studies show they are 190 percent more likely to used drugs or alcohol and four times more likely to attempt suicide. Homophobia and discrimination are at the heart of their pain. Love, support, and acceptance--all within our power to give--can save them. This book is for: clergy, parents, educators, and politicians who cause harm with their words and actions; parents of gay teens; teens navigating this difficult time; and fair-minded people who want to help end the harm. Here are revealing stories by forty diverse Americans, some well known and some not, plus insights from straight clergy and parents explaining their support of gay people as whole human beings guaranteed equal rights by our Constitution.

Out of the Pocket Out of the Pocket
by Konigsberg, Bill
Out of the Pocket tells the fictional coming out story of Bobby Framingham, a 17-year-old star quarterback living in Orange County, CA. Bobby knows he's different from his teammates. They're like brothers, but they don't know that Bobby is gay. After he's outed by a student reporter, Bobby must find a way to earn back his teammates' trust.

The School Library Journal praises the book, calling it a “thought-provoking, funny, and ultimately uplifting story of self-actualization that masterfully defies stereotypes about both coming out and team sports.” Additionally, Out of the Pocket has received the accolade of inclusion in the Fall 2008 “Indie Next List” by the American Booksellers Association.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Bill Konigsberg is an award-winning sports journalist who currently writes for the Associated Press. He has covered the New York Yankees and Mets, and his weekly fantasy baseball column has appeared in newspapers across the country. In May 2001, while working as an assistant editor at ESPN.com, he came out on the front page of the website in an article entitled “Sports World Still a Struggle for Gays.” That article won him a GLAAD Media Award. Since then, he has spoken at venues across the country about what it is like to be one of the few openly gay people in sports media.

Between Men: Best New Gay Fiction
by Canning, Richard
Eighteen of today's best writers are gathered in this stunning collection of new, unpublished stories. Also featured are stories by up-and-coming published writers like Vestal McIntyre, Patrick Ryan, Mack Friedman, and David McConnell. Edmund White delves into nineteenth-century Manhattan, reimagining an encounter between author Stephen Crane and "The Painted Boy." Andrew Holleran brilliantly portrays how youth, beauty, and time encroach on four vacationing gay men. James McCourt releases an unforgettable new outlake from the legendary correspondence of Mawrdew Czgowchwz. And Dale Peck enters the "Garden of the Lost and Found." From Kevin Killian's "Creensleeves" to Wayne Koestenbaum's "Diary of a Quack," and from Robert Gluck's "Bi-Sexual Pussy Boy" to John Weir's "Neo-Realism at the Infiniplex," Between Men is a line-up of extraordinary talent. Like the lives it describes, this collection is rich, diverse, often funny, and sometimes dangerous.

SoMa
by Scott, Kemble
To outsiders, San Francisco is all one big city. But to those in the know, there is SoMa, South of Market. It's home to a generation of hipsters disillusioned by the dotcom bust, restless and searching for the next thrill, the next high... Sex, drugs, kink--you can find anything you want in SoMa, if you know where to look. SoMa tells the story of three young people who journey into this glittering, surreal world of private sex clubs and kept boys, betrayal, redemption, and sometimes love. Drawing on his first hand knowledge of San Francisco's subcultures, Kemble Scott creates a provocative, wholly original, and unforgettable novel.

The Indian Clerk
by Leavitt, David
"Paul Erdos once asked G.H. Hardy, the noted 20th century British mathematician, to name his greatest contribution to their field. Hardy unhesitatingly replied that it was the 'discovery' of Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the great mathematical geniuses in recent centuries. Across the chasm created by color, nationality, education, language, and colonialism, they spoke to each other in the language of pure numbers. Their collaboration plays out in this novel of intellectual history against the clubby atmosphere of British academics, homosexuality, food, and, finally, WWI." --Chris Stier, Shaman Drum Bookshop, Ann Arbor, MI
